Pope Francis Canonized Saint Junipero Serra while on his inaugural visit to the United States.

“Junipero Serra left his native land and its way of life. He was excited about blazing trails, going forth to meet many people, learning and valuing their particular customs and ways of life.”

Saint Junipero was a Spanish missionary who founded the first 9 of 21 Spanish missions in Baja, California. The missions were created to bring faith and Christianity to the Native American people. He was beatified by St. John Paul II in 1988.
