Jess’ description: ” ‘There is no saint without a past; no sinner without a future.’ Augustine of Hippo was a poet and philosopher who is also considered one of the greatest theologians in all history. His writings on sin and salvation left a lasting impact on Christianity and are regarded as treasures of the faith across denominations. His life wasn’t always one of exemplary Christian living. As a youth he took delight in certain behaviors simply because they were wrong. As an adolescent and young man he rejected the Christian faith he was given and embraced a hedonistic lifestyle, at one point fathering a child with a woman he’d never marry. His conversion began when he heard a childlike voice prompting him to open Scripture to Romans 13:13-14, which reads: “Let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” He was baptized, became a priest and then bishop, serving the Church for more than 40 years, but leaving wisdom from his mind that will last for all time. There exist many paintings of St. Augustine as an older man, a bishop, so I chose to depict him younger- a budding saint with a past just as his heart began to burn with love for the faith as he discovered his future in Christ.”
